The challenge

Historically, the farm had used chlorine tablets to try and clean the drinking water but, due to issues with stability and efficacy of these tablets, there was little to no disinfectant present in the drinking water on a regular basis.

It’s well known that if drinking water isn’t disinfected properly and checked for microbial quality, biofilm and pathogens are given free rein to flourish. On a farm, many birds use the same drinking lines, meaning if there are issues with the water quality, this will affect a large number of animals. Bacteria, viruses or protozoa can be transmitted via the drinking water and cause several infectious diseases such as:

  • Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD)
  • Colibacillosis
  • Pseudomonas infection
  • Newcastle Disease
  • Infectious bronchitis
  • Coccidiosis

Water is a vital nutrient for birds, consequently safeguarding the quality is essential for good flock performance and the prevention of diseases in the broilers resulting in diminished costs and augmented profit.

Our solution

Julia spoke with her veterinarian from Poultry Health Services about the water quality at her farm. The veterinarian recommended the use of Huwa-San TR-50 to disinfect the drinking water system. Interhatch, our partner in poultry UK, together with Roam Technology’s Livestock expert visited the farm and conducted a thorough site survey.

As a first step, water samples were taken and a detailed assessment was carried out of the water system. To ensure the best application of Huwa-San TR-50, it was adviced to monitor the application. In consultation they decided to install a pump for each individual house. As part of Roam Technology’s detailed site inspection, a terminal disinfection of the system was performed. This procedure was put in place in between crops to eradicate the biofilm within the system, that had built up over time. Once the new cycle had started, Huwa-San TR-50 was then continuously dosed, at a very low rate, to ensure the drinking water was clean and that biofilm couldn’t re-form.

It is not just about the product, but the advice and training. I can safely say that I am only a phone call away from all the support I need. This is crucial to getting the best out of products.

In this instance, the application adheres entirely to the regulations of the respective country but may not necessarily comply with those of others. It is advisable to consult our in-house experts for guidance on particular applications.

Improved drinking water quality in a broiler farm

A broiler farmer in Spain had a slightly higher mortality rate than normal. At that point of time the farmer was not yet using the Huwa-San technology to clean the drinking water system.
