Huwa-San TR-50 is a stabilised hydrogen peroxide developed for the disinfection of water distribution systems. Its unique formulation ensures long-lasting antimicrobial activity while being safe in use.

Powerful Disinfection, Proven Safe To Use

The use of hydrogen peroxide in irrigation water and the potential side-effects on roots were investigated in the trial “Phytotoxicity caused by hydrogen peroxide during the propagation phase”, conducted by the Research Station for Vegetable Production (PSKW). This study focused on the propagation phase of tomato, bell pepper, and cucumber, and included a comparison between Huwa-San TR-50 and a conventional hydrogen peroxide formulation.

During the experiment, hydrogen peroxide was applied in the nutrient solution at concentrations of 25 ppm, 50 ppm, and 75 ppm active substance. The application aims to disinfect water and prevent biofilm buildup in irrigation systems. This trial was designed to ensure that disinfection residues have no negative effects on roots. Throughout the trial period, the plants were carefully and systematically monitored to detect any potential effects on crop development, plant growth, and root health. As the roots were in direct contact with the nutrient solution, particular attention was given to identifying any signs of root damage or root burn.

The roots were therefore regularly evaluated based on their development and appearance. Root quantity was assessed through the visible root formation at the bottom of the plant block, while root colour was used as an indicator of plant health. White roots reflected a healthy condition without signs of stress or burn damage, and the presence of brown discolouration indicated potential root damage.

Clear Results For Growers

The results of the study clearly demonstrated that no significant negative effects on plant growth or crop development were observed, even at applications of up to 75 ppm hydrogen peroxide.

In addition, root development and overall root quality remained unaffected by the presence of hydrogen peroxide in the nutrient solution. Root colour consistently stayed within normal, healthy ranges throughout the trial, with no indications of root burn or other phytotoxic effects.

Furthermore, no differences were identified between Huwa-San TR-50 and conventional hydrogen peroxide, confirming that the stabilised formulation performs equally safe under these conditions.

Conclusion

Based on this study, it is clear that effective hygiene can be achieved with Huwa-San TR-50 without generating phytotoxicity. The use of hydrogen peroxide up to a concentration of 75 ppm during the propagation phase does not cause phytotoxicity in tomato, bell pepper, or cucumber, confirming that growers do not need to compromise between disinfection and plant health.

Consequently, Huwa-San TR-50 can be confidently applied in nutrient solutions, ensuring optimal system hygiene while avoiding the risk of damage to plant development or the root system.
