African Swine Fever (ASF)

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious disease that affects pigs and wild boars caused by the African Swine Fever virus (ASFV), a member of the Asfarviridae family. ASF is not dangerous to humans, but it is highly contagious and can spread incredibly fast among pigs and wild boars, and therefore causes heavy economic losses. The typical signs of ASF include fever, bleeding, vomiting, loss of appetite, redness of skin, lack of energy and even sudden death.

Focus On Prevention Through Biosecurity

Because there is this no cure or vaccine for this disease, optimising your biosecurity is the most important measure to take in order to prevent a virus outbreak at your farm. Eradicating ASF in affected areas is challenging because wild boars act as a persistent reservoir, so preventing both direct and indirect contact between wild boars and domestic pigs is critical.

Healthy pigs and wild boars usually become infected by:

  • Direct contact with infected animals
  • Indirect contact through ingestion of products from infected animals or contact with contaminated clothing, vehicles or equipment
  • Bites by infectious soft ticks of the Ornithorodos spp genus
Foot dip

Humans can also easily and without realising transmit the disease when they come into contact with an infected animal or infected materials. Therefore, is it important to take preventative measures such as:

  • Cleaning footwear and disinfecting equipment + wear protective clothing
  • Keeping wild boars away from pigs
  • Hunters taking precautionary actions (disinfecting equipment, avoid visiting pig farms after hunting, keep distance from dead boars,…)
  • Immediately reporting any suspicion of infection
  • Monitoring visits at the farm*

*Entry should be managed through a single designated point. Supply clean boots and overalls and have all visitors wash their hands upon entry. The preferred method involves a full shower, including hair, followed by a transition into a dedicated clean area for changing into unit-specific protective clothing and footwear. If a walk-through shower is not feasible, the Danish/Bench Entry system serves as a valuable and efficient alternative

Shield Your Farm Against Harmful Pathogens

To ensure strong biosecurity it is important to focus on the inner and outer ring of a farm. Or in other words: Keep the outside out and the inside clean. In order to keep the inside clean, an important part of your biosecurity plan should be cleaning and disinfecting. By doing this you can prevent harmful viruses, such as ASF, from entering your farm.

At Roam Technology we advise using Roam Eco Power to thoroughly clean your farm and remove over 90% of microorganisms. Roam Eco Power is an active foam cleaner that actively penetrates and dissolves dirt. It’s ideally suited for removing organic deposits on a wide variety of materials in livestock. Cleaning should be followed by disinfecting to kill harmful pathogens. With our disinfectants Huwa-San TR-50 and Virox you’ll be able to kill over 99,99% of microorganisms. Huwa-San is perfect for removing harmful pathogens in pigs’ drinking lines, while Virox is designed for disinfecting surfaces and for use in footbaths.
