Water Quality, the Key to Animal Health

Water quality is essential, not just for maintaining animals’ health, but also for ensuring effective administration and dilution of veterinary products (eg. medicines, vaccines, …). Within livestock facilities, the conditions in and around water systems, such as high temperature and humidity, provide an ideal environment for pathogens to survive and multiply. These harmful organisms can persist for extended periods in waterlines and animal faeces, increasing the risk of infection.

Different Sources of Contamination

Temperature and humidity are important factors in the environmental conditions of water systems. They can form the ideal breeding ground for pathogens to survive and thrive and remain viable for varying periods (see table), and ultimately form biofilms. Furthermore, contamination can originate from a wide range of sources, such as:

  • Animal feed
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Organic matter (leaves, soil,…)
  • Vermin or other pests

In addition, animals themselves can contribute to contamination, since their mouths and faeces frequently come into contact with drinking mechanisms. Once a drinker has been contaminated, pathogens may become embedded into biofilm inside the pipes. These pathogens can then infiltrate water systems through leaks, joints, or air gaps, and remain viable for varying periods depending on the type of pathogen involved.

Disadvantages of Poor Water Quality

Poor water quality can have a significant negative impact on livestock production. Some of the main disadvantages include economic losses as a result of reduced food conversion rates and slower growth rates in animals. Additionally, poor water quality can lead to an increased use of antibiotics and may undermine the effectiveness of vaccination programs. In the poultry sector in particular, biofilm formation in drinking water lines can block access to water, leading to reduced or even no water consumption and resulting in further production losses.
